Hi guys, Happy New Year and welcome back to your exclusive monthly update of the HHS Rapt Readers Book Club! I’m here to give you the details on what went down on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, during each of your lunch periods! If you were there – then you’ve heard everything that’s been said; if not, consider me as your run down of the fiction and non-fiction genres! The topic discussed for this month’s books was “Taking a Risk” And these titles say just that! Below are the following books for January’s list:

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

What I Lost by Alexandra Ballad

Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman’s Awakening by Manal Al-Sharif

Out of pure love for John Green, I decided to read Turtles All the Way Down by John Green! For starters, the cover looks psychedelic and the title screams anxiousness to know “What does it mean for turtles to be all the way down?” However, as you may know John Green has captivated the world with his humor, intellect, and well his quirky book titles! Let’s jump right into the summary shall we?

“Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.

Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

John Green shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.”

This book really gives an insight into both mental illness and a girl who knows so much about bacteria. Aza is a character that I really related to. I liked that despite her mental illness, she was so humorous about it all. Others may find her annoying, but I find her interesting and awkwardly funny! She doesn’t mean to be a buzz kill, she just comes off like that. What really gave me anger – or frustration – was the best friend, Daisy. She loves to ramble on and write Star Wars fanfiction. What I found very shady was when the best friend included the main character into her fanfiction under a slightly changed name – she literally named the character in her fan fiction Ayala, just a few changed letters from Aza! – and made her seem like the buzz kill of THAT story too! Talk about what a friend that is!

Overall, the novel was great; I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars. As always John Green captures you and keeps stringing you along; but he seems to have a novel pattern that he’s determined to keep going – really smart, awkward protagonists who are always obsessed with something. But we love you, John Green.

If you’re looking for something that gives you an insight into mental illness, astronomical facts about the galaxy, and lessons about life, then read Turtles All the Way Down now!

Well guys, that’s it for this month of January. Catch you in a couple of weeks for February’s HHS Rapt Readers Book Club Meeting!
