Cycling is viewed mostly as a White sport. But not to this man, Major Taylor was the fastest man ever to race on two wheels, his real name was Marshall Walter but mostly known by the name “Major” Taylor. Taylor was an American who dominated sprint cycling in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Taylor won the first amateur race when he was only 14. He turned professional four years later and continued winning races on oval tracks at Madison Square Garden and other arenas in the eastern US. The name Major Taylor sometimes doesn’t ring a bell when you think of black history but we can change that. Taylor was a great athlete and in fact one of the greatest at what he did. Taylor is an interesting man to learn about, you should look him up when you get the chance!
