Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and became a leading abolitionist. She led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom along the route of the Underground Railroad. She was born to slavery in Maryland in 1820 and started her childhood working as a slave soon to escape from freedom going to the north in 1849 to soon become one of the famous “conductors” in the Underground Railroad. Harriet Tubman risked her life to lead over 300 slaves to freedom. She not only helped in the Underground Railroad but after the Civil war ended she also helped in the Union Army as a spy among other roles.
